  2. How do you even CAPTURE these kinds of shots? I can’t even imagine trying to navigate waves while simultaneously catching these amazing pix!

    • I mind surf all the time, it keeps me sane between trips to the beach. I even used to surf in the winter in New York cause I couldn’t wait for the spring

      March 9, 2012 at 3:32 pm

      • Wow… your an addict of surfing… Lucky you.. 🙂 Go for it..

    March 9, 2012 at 1:49 pm

    • Mahalo’s all around sir, I’m a big fan of Retirement but instead of taking it all off at 65, I decided to retire 3-5 months a year and take pictures. What ever makes you happy right 🙂

Suddenly I realized how much I miss summer…
Sweden is not a good place when you don’t like winter. 😦

    http://bitterfia.wordpress.com

    March 9, 2012 at 1:52 pm

    • It’s funny you say that because one of the best surf photographers on the planet lives in Sweden, Jeff Flindt. Well at least he spend summers there with his wife and kid

      March 9, 2012 at 3:30 pm

      • Fia

Swedish summers are wonderful! But the winters are so dark and cold. Depressing as h*ll..

        March 10, 2012 at 7:12 am

      • I used to live in New York and surf thru out the winters, don’t know how it compares to Sweden but tomorrow the USA has Daylight Saving Time. Basically an indication of lighter times. I’m one of the always optimistic people that believes the cold only makes the warmth feel that much better. So I hope you are currently stuck inside freezing haha

  10. JC Finch

How do you take these pictures? Are you like intensely talented with surfing, holding objects on moving surfaces and photography or do you just video tape it all and hope for the best? I think I know the answer already, I just find it hard to imagine it.

    March 9, 2012 at 1:56 pm

    • No I only take stills, I have a water housing for my SLR Nikon and I swim out to the break and hold position by treading water with swim fins 🙂

      March 9, 2012 at 3:27 pm

  11. Awesome photos!

    March 9, 2012 at 1:56 pm

  12. i was wondering how you were taking those, too. unique perspective!

    March 9, 2012 at 2:07 pm

    • I have a waterproof case for my Camera (SPL Water housing) and I swim out to the surfers and get as close as I can with out getting hit or throw over the wave. Kind of dangerous but lots of fun

      March 9, 2012 at 5:07 pm

  13. Wow, those waves look amazing, and these pictures are so inspirational, especially the first one!

    March 9, 2012 at 2:23 pm

    • Thanks, pulling into a barrel in Hawaii is a right of passage for every surfer. Why it’s the mecca of surfing.

      March 9, 2012 at 5:23 pm

  14. L.

You are further inspiring me to move south. Haha. Great captures! What kind of camera/housing do you use?

    March 9, 2012 at 2:40 pm

    • SPL water housing 17-55 port (mid range adjustable). Nikon D300s Nikon 17-55 F/2.8 also shoot nikon 10.5 fisheye

      March 9, 2012 at 3:24 pm

      March 9, 2012 at 3:22 pm

      • I would actually love to. After I get over some fears. But I don’t leave near beautiful beaches. =(

        March 9, 2012 at 4:05 pm

    • Just do it! There’s not much more in life as fulfilling as going out and spending time on the ocean, looking in at the shore…so much just washes away. I’ll be glad to help as well. Surfing is amazing.

    March 9, 2012 at 4:33 pm

    • I travel all around but all of these shots were taken on the North Shore of Oahu, HI this winter. @ the surf spot Rocky Point (named for the jagged reef that is exposed along the beach)

      March 9, 2012 at 4:47 pm

  28. I am deathly afraid of sharks and after seeing Soul Surfer, I was kinda like yeah maybe ill stay more inland, but your post has sparked my interest in surfing! Gorgeous shots and congrats on being freshly pressed 🙂

    March 9, 2012 at 4:39 pm

    • I met Bethany this year in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu, really sweet girl with a big smile on her face all day. Sharks are there but surfing is an addicting sport once your hook not much will stop you from going into the water. I don’t even have a board to stop the bite, I just swim into the break so lets hope for good luck hehe.

Thanks for checking out the site 🙂

  38. Really nice – do you have the camera tethered?
    Thanks for sharing!

    Light Blue

    March 9, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    • Yeah my water housing has a leash. 3lb for my camera (nikon d300s) 3lb for the water housing (SPL). So basically I have a 6lbs weight attached to my arm. So if I ever let go its a good chance it will knock me out when I’m spinning a around in the white wash (the area after a wave crashes).

So long story short I NEVER LET GO! hahaha

      March 9, 2012 at 7:45 pm

  39. I love the photos. Surfing seems like so much fun. How I hope I can grab the opportunity one day!

As a child visiting the Kenyan Coast with my parents I used to get worried that the waves would carry the surfers away never to return. The basics to any good photography are the same. It’s being able to get those shots while moving and getting throw around thats hard. Thanks for finding me

  87. how do you even start to capture these wonderful shots? are you like underwater sneaking your head up and out of the ocean? haha well nice pictures!

    March 11, 2012 at 5:39 am

    • That about sums it up, I swim out take as many frames as I can before I have to dive under (so I don’t get pounded by the wave). It’s never “safe” but once you get a feel for the ocean you can safely swim around, just don’t get greedy haha

      March 11, 2012 at 6:38 am

I took some photos from dry land last year http://morganwiltshireblog.com/2011/10/08/surfer-in-silence/ but I’m tempted to try and get in the water this year.
